Raja Halijah (Wan Jah,  Ah or Tok Ah) was born in 1931. She was known as the ‘iron lady’ of the Razman family. She was Dang Perwara, or lady-in-waiting, to DYMM Raja Perempuan Muzwin and DYMM Raja Permaisuri Bainun before her demise on 21 November 1991 at the age of 60.

  1. I saw the name Rumah Hitam being mentioned a few times in your blog.

I was wondering, where is this Rumah Hitam? The Architectural Style? I saw Rumah Merah when I was in MCKK.

Please post more pictures of Rumah Hitam.

    • Hi Rizal,

Rumah Hitam is not as grand as Istana Hulu, Rumah Merah, Istana Tengku Ampuan Selangor, etc.

It is just a normal Malay house and it is black in colour. Bukit Chandan has many houses and istanas named after its colour e.g. Rumah Merah and Istana Kuning. Therefore, we named our grandfather’s house Rumah Hitam (it’s really hitam!!!). FYI, it is located opposite Istana Kuning (now demolished), next to Istana Firdaus (blue-coloured then) and about 100 metres from Rumah Merah.

Rumah Hitam originally was erected in Talang. When our grandfather retired as Penghulu of Kampung Buaia, the house was dismantled and being re-erected to its present location. And that is the history of Rumah Hitam in short.

      Thank you for visiting SembangKuala.

  2. Thank you so much. That’s very enlightening.

I think grandeur is very subjective, no? The mere name, Rumah Hitam, suggests grandeur, tradition, and people whispering secrets of bygone eras. Forgive me for being sentimental. I blame my five years in Kuala Kangsar for that.

Anyway, I am getting very very confused. Is Istana Kuning another name for Istana Kenangan? And where is Istana Hulu?

Pictures of these places, from the National Archive or of Personal Collections will be very much appreciated.

    Thank you very much.

Keep up the good work man!

    • Rizal,

We agree that the term ‘grandeur’ is very subjective & depending on individual perspective. Istana Hulu is now the Sultan Azlan Shah’s gallery. Yes, many people mistake the Istana Kenangan or Istana Lembah as Istana Kuning just because of its yellow colour!

Thank you so much for visiting us again.

  3. Hold on!!! I think I remember!

I’ve passed by Istana Kuning, If I’m not mistaken, it’s this really grand house, on the same road as Rumah Merah, from Chandan to Kuala Kangsar right? It has a Perak style to it right? The bumbung

    It’s demolished?!!!

Why? Have you got any pictures of Istana Kuning? I saw it a few years ago, on a very short trip to Chandan, then Pangkor.

    Please!

    Thanks!

    • Hmmm….not quite sure about the “really grand” description of Istana Kuning… but it’s quite similar to Rumah Merah (from the front). The one that you mentioned (on the same stretch as Rumah Merah) could be Baitul Aman, a house of Raja Kechil Sulong Harun Al Rashid. Unfortunately, the house was destroyed by fire a few years back. There’s another house (exactly the same as Baitul Aman) located by the entrance of Istana Iskandariah. Anyway, we will try to get the photo of Istana Kuning (but no promises!).

      • Salam Chiman,

Perhaps you might want to ask Ku Chik Izaliah. She may have some photos of Istana Kuning which could evoke nostalgia in some…🙂 Ku Chik used to live there when her late father was the Sultan’s secretary. In fact, I think she was born there.
