Readers of SembangKuala would have read a post on the attributes of a Paduka Seri published in September 2009, written by YM Raja Kobat Sallehuddin, who is currently a consultant editor for SembangKuala.
The editors wondered how Ayah (as they would call him, although his army and polo club friends would call him by the monicker Roger K!) Kobat immersed himself in the subject of Malay history and traditions. Ayah Kobat happily elaborated to us, “It was way back in the early 70’s. However, it may well have been before that, as since I was in my teens, my fervent and ever supportive mentors in this subject were my beloved Atah (Ku Nick) Razman, Atah (Panjang) Shahriman, and Cikgu Ahmad Manjang of Kota Lama Kiri, who was a retired headmaster and lover of Perak-Bugis history, along with my grandfather’s valet, Pak Tahir. My other mentors later included the penghulu of Manong, when my Perak Riverine mentors and I frequently roamed the Perak River basin in my red Austin Mini Cooper 998cc to keenly search and compile whatever surviving information and data of historical and traditional values that remain in the desa at that point of time in Perak. My history patrons and strength are still the Almarhum Sultan Idris II and my Atah Ku Nick.”
Raja Kobat’s other known talent to many is music, as he has been a composer and lyricist for many years. Since 1979, following his first recorded Malay pop composition sung by the late Datin Rafeah Buang was released, Raja Kobat had written, to date, 201 recorded songs. When asked what his music styles are, “I see myself as a composer and lyricist of Malay pop, Malay-Latin-Arabic music and irama Melayu klasik.” Lately, he has been actively involved in the Indonesian music scene. “My latest composition Alun Si Awek Muda sung by Bidadari (a trio from Jambi) produced by Pak Ngah Productions will be released in Jakarta on November 19th 2009. However, the distribution by Warner Music Indonesia is currently limited for the Indonesian market.”
YM Raja Kobat Sallehuddin is a retired captain in the military and is the brother of the present Raja Di-Hilir Perak, DYAM Raja Jaafar Raja Muda Musa. We at SembangKuala are grateful for Ayah Kobat’s immense contribution to this website. As for his willingness to lend us a helping hand with articles and arranging interviews with notable members of the family, we remember him describing himself at a late evening sogheh session, “I am a Perak loyalist and a traditionalist!”
