Al-Ghufran Royal Mausoleum revisited: An activity for the benefit of all

On the morning of 15 December 2009, Raja Nur Jannah binti Raja Hirdan led a group of ladies comprising Raja Nor Izaliah binti Raja Badri Shah, Raja Azmatul Azfa binti Raja Mohamed Iskandar, Raja Khalidatul Asrin binti Raja Shahabudin, Raja Fuziah binti Raja Abdul Aziz and Raja Mariam binti Raja Mohamed Iskandar to the Al-Ghufran Royal Mausoleum at Bukit Chandan, Kuala Kangsar for works that would make the identification and locations of the tombs readily accessible to families and visitors alike. The aim is to provide and publish a comprehensive list of all the tombs located at the Royal Mausoleum. It was not a one-day event and several other visits were conducted subsequently.

Makam Sultan Abdullah Muhammad II.

To achieve this aim, zoning of the burial ground into the respective Royal families laid to rest there is necessary. We started with the families of Almarhum Sultan Abdullah Muhammad II located at the area which was designated Zone A. Altogether, 68 tombs were tagged and later identified and recorded. With the help of Raja Azmatul Azfa, many of the tombs inscribed in Jawi were successfully identified. However, the team was unable to identify 17 tombs in Zone A as markings on the headstones were hardly visible while some had no markings on them whatsoever. We will need to resort to other means to identify them at a later date.

After completing the identification and recording of all the zones, we hope to obtain approval from the relevant authority to erect a signboard depicting the routes leading to all the tombs located in these zones. A monumental task, but it is our hope that more relatives will come forward to lend their assistance to make it a reality.

Among those lending their hands in this project. From left to right: Raja Fuziah, Raja Azmatul Azfa, Raja Khalidatul Asrin, Raja Nur Jannah & Raja Mariam. Among others were, Raja Nor Izaliah, Raja Fatimah Raja Shoran, Tengku Yasmin

Note from the Project Team champion, others are welcome to lend your support.
