It was 82 years ago on 19 April 1928 when a prince was born in Batu Gajah, Perak. The prince was named Raja Azlan Shah and is the youngest child of the then Raja Bendahara Yusuff Izzudin (later Sultan from 1948 to 1963) ibni Almarhum Sultan Abdul Jalil.
DYMM Sultan Azlan Shah is an all-rounder, excelling in every field he is involved in – studies, sports, and later on, his career in the legal profession. Tuanku was a hockey player and was once the centre forward for the Perak Malays team. Tuanku read law at the University of Nottingham and obtained the Bachelor of Laws in 1953, and was subsequently admitted to the English Bar by the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn on 23 November 1954. Tuanku rose the rank in the Judiciary system where he was appointed as the Lord President of the Federal Court on 12 November 1982 before being installed as the Sultan of Perak on 3 February 1984. After five years on the throne, Sultan Azlan Shah was elected to become Malaysia’s ninth Yang di-Pertuan Agong from 26 April 1989 to 25 April 1994.
The editors of SembangKuala would like to humbly extend our very best wishes to DYMM Sultan Azlan Shah on the occasion of his 82nd birthday. We also like to wish Tuanku and his family good health and good cheer.
