Did you know that the first Perlis MB was from Kuala Kangsar?
Raja Dato’ Haji Ahmad bin Raja Endut was born in Kuala Kangsar on 15 June 1892. His father, Raja Endut @ Tengku Bongsu Kenali, was a descendant of Almarhum Paduka Seri Sultan Long Yunus ibni Almarhum Sultan Long Sulaiman of Kelantan who reigned from 1763 to 1795. His early education was at a Sekolah Melayu before entering The Malay College for his secondary education.
Raja Dato’ Haji Ahmad entered the Malay Administrative Service (MAS) at the age of 21 in 1913, and was finally absorbed into the Malay Civil Service (MCS) in 1932. He was at one point the District Officer for Larut and Matang, and in 1936 for Gerik.
Raja Dato’ Haji Ahmad was the Menteri Besar of Perlis from 1948 to 1954. He was not affiliated with any of the political parties in Malaya at that time. As MB of Perlis, he attended he first Conference of Rulers (Majlis Mesyuarat Raja-Raja) after the formation of the Federation of Malaya at the Dewan Mesyuarat Undangan Persekutuan in Kuala Lumpur on 18 February 1948. He was also amongst the chief ministers present at the official unveiling of the national flag of the Federation of Malaya (known to us now as the Jalur Gemilang) by the High Commissioner of Malaya, Sir Henry Gurney, at the Sultan of Selangor’s palace in Kuala Lumpur on 26 May 1950. For his meritorious service, he was awarded the OBE by the British Government and the Pingat Jasa Kebaktian (PJK).
Raja Dato’ Haji Ahmad passed away on 26 August 1977 and was interred at Masjid Kampung Paloh, Ipoh.
Raja Dato’ Haji Ahmad was married several times, which included a marriage to Tengku Raudhah binti Tengku Abdul Kadir, a Kelantan royal also descended from Almarhum Paduka Seri Sultan Long Yunus. They had issue which include Raja Dato Seri Aman who is currently Independent Non-Executive Director of Affin Investment Bank.
