Sultan Nazrin Muizzudin Shah is the eldest son of the 34th Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Yussuf Izzudin Shah (1984-2014). He was born in Penang on 27th November 1956.
As a child, Sultan Nazrin Muizzudin Shah is a bright student and his academic qualifications are above excellence. He received his early education at St John’s Institution, Kuala Lumpur before obtaining his B.A. (Hons) degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Oxford University. After returning from his higher education abroad, Sultan Nazrin Muizzudin Shah worked as an Executive at Petronas from 1979 to 1983. He then pursued his post-graduate education and received Master in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University and a Ph.D. in Political Economy and Government from Harvard University. His research interests are in the areas of economic and political development in Southeast Asia, economic growth in developing countries and economic history. Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah was also conferred an honorary Master of Business Administration by the Cranfield Institute of Technology, United Kingdom in 1993, an honorary Doctor of Economics by Soka University, Japan in 1999 and an honorary membership of Magdalene College, University of Cambridge, United Kingdom in 2005.
Sultan Nazrin Muizzudin Shah was granted the Raja Kechil Besar title on 16th February 1984 upon the demise of Sultan Idris Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar Shah (1963-1984). Three years later, when Raja Muda, Raja Ahmed Siffudin passed away, he was made Raja Muda on 15th April 1987 bypassing Raja Di-Hilir, Raja Ahmad Hisham bin Raja Abdul Malik due to his advancing age. Sultan Nazrin Muizzudin Shah was appointed as Regent of Perak from 1989 to 1994 when his father became the Ninth Yang Di-Pertuan Agong (Paramount Ruler or King of Malaysia).
Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah ibni ibni Almarhum Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah was proclaimed the 35th Sultan of Perak on 29 May 2014. The proclamation by Orang Kaya Bendahara Seri Maharaja, General (R) Tan Sri Mohd Zahidi Zainuddin, at Balairong Seri in Istana Iskandariah in Kuala Kangsar. The ceremony was held before the body of Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah was taken for burial. The ceremony began with Orang Kaya Bendahara Seri Maharaja reading out the proclamation, after which Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah took his oath and signed the document of oath as ruler. Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah will be installed as the 35th Sultan of Perak on 6 May 2015.
As the head of Islamic religion in the state, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah places greater emphasis in uplifting Islam. He believes that a Muslim nation is not one formed only by its namesake, but should also create a ruling system which practices good deeds and prevents wrongdoings. As the torchbearer of Islam, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah believed in moderation. During the proclamation as the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah pledges to protect the good name and sanctity of Islam. Therefore, it is common to see mosque institution contributing to progress and development in Perak under his reign.
Sultan Nazrin Muizzudin Shah is known as a caring Ruler who takes a personal interest in the welfare and concerns of the state’s subjects. As Raja Muda and the Regent of Perak, he was actively involved in various charitable causes. In many of his royal addresses, he always expresses his concerns and thoughts in the area of economic and political development not only on Perak but the country as a whole.
Education is also a subject close to Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah’s heart. He takes a keen interest in the well-being of the people and supports any effort to improve the quality of the people through education. Given his passion towards academic development in the country, he has been Pro-Chancellor of University Malaya from 1989 and in 2014 as the Chancellor of Universiti Malaya. Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah is also the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Malay College, Kuala Kangsar.
Besides that, he is a Member of the Chancellor’s Court of Benefactor, University of Oxford and Honorary Fellow of Worcester College, University of Oxford. He is a Member of the Board of Trustees of the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, University of Oxford, Royal Patron of the Kuala Lumpur Business. Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah is also an Eminent Fellow of the Institute of Strategic and International Studies, Malaysia; Royal Fellow of the Malaysian Institute of Defence and Security as well as the Chairman of Merdeka Award.
Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah plays a pivotal role in promoting Islamic Finance by assuming the role as the Financial Ambassador for the Malaysia International Islamic Financial Centre (MIFC) initiatives. The MIFC is an influential body in accelerating the process of bridging and strengthening relationships with international Islamic financial markets and thereby expanding the investment and trade relations between the Middle East, West Asia and North Africa regions with East Asia.
Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah is married to Tuanku Zara Salim. Born in Ipoh on 22 March 1973, Tuanku Zara Salim is the youngest of four children of William Stanley Walker Davidson and Sharifah Azaliah Binti Syed Omar Shahabudin. Her father is a prominent lawyer while her mother is the granddaughter of Sultan Abdul Hamid of Kedah. Tuanku Zara Salim had her early education at SMK Convent Ipoh. She represented her school in squash and tennis and and Perak state in swimming team between 1981 and 1987. Tuanku Zara Salim also possesses a strong interest in foreign languages.
After completing her A-Levels at Prime College in 1992, Tuanku Zara Salim left for the United Kingdom to pursue her studies in chemical engineering at the University of Nottingham. She graduated with first class honours in July 1995. She also won the top student award for her final year project.
Upon completion of her studies, Tuanku Zara Salim was employed by Petronas. Her career there started at the Business Evaluation Department, Corporate Planning Unit. During her 6 years tenure with the national oil company, her contributions were enormous. Tuanku Zara Salim is also a certified life-saver and adventure sports enthusiast.
The couple married at Istana Iskandariah on 17 May 2007 and blessed with a prince and a princess, Raja Azlan Muzaffar Shah ( the present Raja Kechil Besar) and Raja Nazira Safya respectively.
