The following is a translated excerpt from the Buku Chenderamata Pertabalan Sultan Azlan Shah describing the installation of DYMM Paduka Seri Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah at Istana Iskandariah on 9 December 1985.
The installation ceremony began with the tabal adat which was held on 9 December 1985 (26 Rabiuawal 1406H). On arrival at the Balai Rong Seri, DYMM Paduka Seri Sultan Azlan Muhibuddin Shah ibni Almarhum Sultan Yussuf Izzudin Shah took to his seat on the singgahsana, accompanied by DYMM Raja Permaisuri Bainun Mohd Ali, DYTM Raja Muda Ahmed Sifuddin ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, DYTM Raja Puan Besar Nor Izan binti Raja Bendahara Abdul Rashid and the rest of the royal retinue.
The installation was preceded by the arrival of the Dato’ Pengelola Di-Raja’s entrance into the Balai Rong Seri, accompanied by the Sahibul Samahah Mufti of Perak. The Raja Chik Muda Pawang Di-Raja, led by Panglima Dalam and flanked by the Panglima Perang Kanan and Kiri, carried the sword Chura Si-Manjakini while the bentaras bore the other articles of the Perak regalia.
The Raja Chik Muda Pawang Di-Raja then presented Chura Si-Manjakini to DYMM Paduka Seri Sultan Azlan Shah, following which the sword is unsheathed and DYMM Paduka Seri Sultan Azlan Shah proceeded to kiss the sword’s edge. Chura Si-Manjakini was then resheathed.
The Toh Seri Nara Di-Raja then came forward to the singgahsana to present DYMM Paduka Seri Sultan Azlan Shah the Mestika Embun. The Chap Halilintar was then placed on Tuanku’s right ear following which the Toh Seri Nara whispered the Rahsia Nasab Sultani.
The YAB Orang Kaya Seri Maharaja then stood to proclaim DYMM Paduka Seri Sultan Azlan Shah as the 34th Sultan of Perak. At that moment, the installation of the Sultan of Perak was officially complete. The YAB Orang Kaya Temenggong Paduka Raja mengangkat sembah and proclaimed “DAULAT TUANKU!” three times, which was reciprocated by those present in the Balai Rong Seri. The newly installed DYMM Paduka Seri Sultan Azlan Shah then took his seat on the singgahsana accompanied by sound of the nobat and a 21-gun salute.
The YAB Orang Kaya Temenggong then stood to welcome Raja Permaisuri Bainun to mengadap DYMM Paduka Seri Sultan Azlan Shah for her investiture as the DYMM Raja Permaisuri. The ceremony began with the Raja Permaisuri stood to mengangkat sembah accompanied by the Tok Rakna Senari to the point of the singgahsana. DYMM Paduka Seri Sultan Azlan Shah then invited the Raja Permaisuri to be seated at the singgahsana together. Similar to the installation of the Sultan, the YAB Orang Kaya Temenggong Paduka Raja then mengangkat sembah and proclaimed “DAULAT TUANKU!” three times, again reciprocated by those present in the Balai Rong Seri.
Raja Chik Muda Pawang Di-Raja then began the istiadat merenjis air Panca Bicara on both DYMM Paduka Seri Sultan Azlan Shah and DYMM Raja Permaisuri Bainun. A speech was then made by DYTM Raja Muda Ahmed Sifuddin on behalf of the other Rajas from Perak and other states. The ceremony continued with DYMM Paduka Seri Sultan Azlan Shah’s address (titah ucapan DYMM Paduka Seri Sultan).
A doa selamat (prayer) was then made by the Sahibul Samahah Mufti of Perak to bring the installation of DYMM Paduka Seri Sultan Azlan Shah to a close.
Chura Si-Manjakini was carried by Sang Sapurba in this manner when he made the promise with Demang Lebar Daun, the Raja of Palembang.
Nasab (نسب) is a series of patronymics (personal name based on the name of one’s father) in genealogy indicating a person’s heritage by the word ibn (or bin) meaning ‘the son of’. Several nasab can follow in a chain, to trace a person’s ancestry backwards in time, and this instance the nasab sultani traces the Perak Sultan’s heritage to Raja Iskandar Zulqarnain of Makaduniah.
