Throughout the history of Perak, we would have heard of the names of:
1. Sultan Muzaffar Shah – the first Sultan of Perak descended from the Royal House of Melaka
2. Tun Saban – a Malay Chief of Hulu Perak who was said to have had an audience with Sultan Mahmud Shah in Kampar requesting that a prince be brought to Perak and made Sultan
3. Megat Terawis – the first Bendahara of Perak, descended from the great imperial house of Pagar Ruyung
4. Syed Hussain Al-Faradz Jamalullail – the first Orang Kaya Menteri of Perak who came to Perak in 1528, from the Perak House of Jamulallail said to be descendants of Fatima az-Zahra, the daughter of Muhammad SAW
5. Daeng Salili (Haji Besar) – the first Maharaja Lela Tan Lela Putera Panchong Ta’ Bertanya, bestowed by Sultan Muzaffar Shah III, and a Bugis Raja from Sulawesi
You may have read an entry SembangKuala posted in August on Megat Terawis, and since then we have received a genealogy chart from saudara Megat Iskandar Megat Zaharuddin, which shows the links between the families of the aforementioned five men.

A few interesting points of note can be gleaned from the chart (which is non-exhaustive):
1. The earliest ancestor of Megat Terawis seen here was a half-Sumatran, half-Javanese prince named Adityavarman who resided in Tanah Datar, West Sumatera in the 14th century. Adityavarman left numerous stone inscriptions, which were the first historical records of West Sumatra.
2. Yamtuan Raja Hitam, an ancestor of the current ruling house of Negeri Sembilan (to be exact, the great-great-great-great-great grandfather of DYMM Tuanku Muhriz) was the descendant of a daughter of Megat Terawis.
3. Eminent Megats like Dato Seri Dr Megat Khas and Tan Sri Dato Seri Megat Najmuddin (current president of MCOBA) are descendants of Megat Menjanas and Raja Kenayan Shah Alam, a daughter of Sultan Muzaffar Shah II of Perak. Megat Menjanas in turn was a descendant of both Megat Terawis and Tun Bongsu Bangsawan, daughter of Tun Saban.
4. Raja Chulan Raja Abdul Hamid (author of Hikayat Misa Melayu) was married to a grand-daughter of Daeng Salili and Raja Su, sister to Sultan Muzaffar Shah III.
5. Syed Shamsuddin bin Menteri Bendahara Syed Abu Bakar was married to Puteri Bulan binti Megat Mutabar, the grand-daughter of Bendahara Megat Pendia, one of the Perak generals who led the army in the war against Bugis in Bukit Gantang in the 1740’s. The other two Perak generals in this war were Raja Muda Iskandar (later Sultan Iskandar Dzulkarnain) and Raja Kimas (later Sultan Mahmud Shah).

Unfortunately, due to the immense number of people (as you can well imagine) within these five families, the chart does not include the ‘tempias’ members of the family. The chart was kindly provided by Megat Iskandar At-Terawis, who comes by every so often to this blog, and, whilst this is no promise, may well be of some help.

She was actually married to Dato’ Haji Mohd Esa, JP, Dato’ Seri Maha Kurnia diRaja.
Thank you Sdr Nazalan for the comment. About Puteri Zubaidah Megat Musa, I will check with my sources. I am pretty sure in 1959, she is married to Dato’ Megat Osman. Will check on the date of marriage or any other marriages linked to her.

Well done on this splendid site. What is the source of the Negeri Sembilan genealogy presented here – in particular the 12 generations from Adityawarman to Raja Melewar? There are some discrepancies with another tree in my possession.
Was there any contact (or rivalry) between Raja Melewar and the descendants of Megat Terawis? And are there any continuing links between the descendants of Megat Terawis and Pagar Ruyong?

To answer Engku Zain’s query (without sounding like we’re passing the buck 😀 ) – this ‘brief’ genealogy which includes the royal house of Pagar Ruyung was compiled by Megat Iskandar Megat Zaharuddin, which is based on his research as part of his Masters degree at SOAS, London. The Pagar Ruyung link was done after I came back to Malaysia – after my SOAS days…
As for the Pagar Ruyung Genealogy, my main reference is Dt Rj Sampono’s Selintas Minangkabau.
When I compiled the genealogy, the only connection that I personally have doubts is the upper part of the Pagar Ruyung – more precisely from Tuanku Pandang and Tuanku Moneng upwards – which leads to Adityavarman.
Selintas Minangkabau (it took me months to decipher between the pages) mentioned about the genealogy and the inter-relations between all the Minangkabu Rulers. I am more than willing to share / discuss the discrepancies with Tunku Zain (perhaps outside SembangKuala as this topic is deviating too far from Perak and Kuala Kangsor). Maybe the genealogy from Tunku Zain will enlighten us on the true picture. (tengah bersemangat ni…)
About Tunku Zain’s question on any contact between the two lines – I’m not sure whether Raja Melewar had any contacts with the Megats in Perak during his time because there’s no mention in any historical text.
BUT, since Raja Melewar is a descendant of Yamtuan Pasambahan (son-in-law to Megat Terawis), I’d say that when the sons of Yamtuan Pasambahan became the Raja Alam of Pagar Ruyung, the Imperial House of Pagar Ruyung did help Perak.
Remember the story of Puteri Limau Purut? The Bendahara of Perak was sent by Sultan Mansur Shah II of Perak to bring back Puteri Limau Purut. That Bendahara of Perak is MEGAT ABDULLAH (Bendahara Garang) – grandson of Megat Terawis. If we look at the genealogy – this Megat Abdullah is a FIRST COUSIN of the Yamtuan Raja Alam of Pagar Ruyung. I think Bendahara Garang Megat Abdullah went to see the Sultan of Acheh and most probably this was the dialogue:
“I punya cousin, jiran you kat Pagar Ruyung tu. You tak kasi, I kasi hello sama dia. ”
(unfortunately, there’s no evidence to support this claim apart from the family tie)

Alhamdulillah,it is very encouraging that feedbacks received by sembangkuala has shed more insight into the 5 families mentioned. It is interesting to note that one of the strategies employed to cement these ‘large’ family was through inter-marriages. This wisdom was a contributory factor in the upholding of the many sultanates in the Malay archipelago, not withstanding the role of the Sulu sultanate, of which The Royal Sate of Brunei was predominant. This was significant considering the threats from the Land of the The White Elephants, the Hindus from the north and the Spaniards in the Sulus. It is heartening to note that it is this wisdom of ‘inter-marriage’ that is tying the role of the monarchies in the states of Perak, Pahang, Johor, Selangor and Terengganu. Thank you, your majesties!!!

Menyentuh tentang keturunan Daeng Selili ni, suami saya adalah keturunan dari beliau sebelah ibu suami. Dimana suami saya adalah old cliffordian class of 1962. Nama suami Lt.Kol (B) Mohamed Aris Bin Ariffin. Suami mempunyai pertalian darah sebelah ibunya iaitu Surafeahtul Adawiyah@Che Su binti Dato’ Mohd Esa Bin Kulop Shah Bin Zainal Abidin Bin Daeng Selili. Suami dilahirkan di istana Raja Muda Teluk Anson tahun 1944 pada waktu DYMM Sultan Yusuf Izzuddin Shah menjadi Raja Muda. Suami ada menceritakan bahawa nenda beliau Puteri Zabedah Binti Megat Musa dn ibu beliau Surafeahtul Adawiyah@Che Su pernah sama-sama dgn DYMM Raja Perempuan Ta’ayah. Datuk beliau Dato’ Mohd Esa Bin Kulop Shah (Dato’ Kurnia) adalah adik beradik susuan dgn baginda DYMM Raja Perempuan Ta’ayah. Manakala suami adalah adik beradik susuan dengan YM Raja Nor Mahani Binti Raja Sahar. Tak sangka jugak suami ni ada salasilah berdampingan dgn Kerabat Diraja Perak. Suami pernah menyatakan hasrat utk melawat Kuala Kangsar dn juga menziarah makam diraja di Bukit Chandan. Insya’Allah suami pun teringin sangat nk jumpa dgn Ku… Jazakallahu khairan khatiran.
